The design brief is for an office tower with a height of 60 meters for the Guangdong Macau Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology Industrial Park an emerging development in Hengqin Area of Zhuhai. The building will serve as client’s headquarter with rentable offices, Exhibition Centre, Business Incubation Centre, Service Centre and etc. The client envisions the building as the gateway and icon of the Park. It will create a sharing platform for scientific researches, cultural displays and developments of traditional Chinese medicine, forging a multidimensional public space.
Villa Otto's ‘flying saucer-like' design was conceived with a dynamic elevation. The unique outward thrusting walls and canopies gives the impression of a spacecraft either about to land or take off. The curvaceous interlocking of two circular pavilions forms the lucky number eight in Chinese culture. Despite the voluptuous external form, the internal spaces are largely straight. The vast living, dining and bedrooms emit an opulence to these rooms which seems to celebrate the privacy of personal space as a kind of luxury.
The project is the headquarters of a regional diversified business, blending with the old adjacent context and introducing the future master plan. The two faces of the complex adjacent to the roads are more solid in appearance, evolving to independent ‘L-bar’ volumes which contain all supporting services and allow adjacent offices maximum efficiency. In contrast to the’ L-bar’, the open-plan office space is ‘soft, flowing and highly transparent’ reflecting the ethos of the company.
